Transferring and releasing personal information of individuals will now be considered a criminal offence. Those who attempt to misuse personal information will face severe penalties. The law approved by the cabinet in 2021 came into effect from today. Personal information of individuals collected for various purposes is covered by the Data Protection Act. Images, videos and texts containing personal information collected at various events, conferences, parties etc. are personal information affecting individuals. It is a criminal offense to transfer, release or destroy these to others.

This category also includes transferring to others phone numbers, photos, videos including CCTV footage, information stored in paper or electronic form, collected in various contexts in business establishments, hospitals etc. Transfer of patient information from hospitals to drug companies, copying of personal information of individuals held by government institutions, transfer of credit information, police and criminal information etc. are all violations of data protection laws. Violations of such laws are punishable with heavy fines. The data protection system is implemented in collaboration with the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority. The Cabinet approved the Data Protection Act in September 2021.
