The soap opera of the supposed banishment of iPhones already China has just gained another development. First, we learned that members of the Asian country’s government had been banned from using iPhones; later, that this measure might also be expanded to employees of state-owned companies — which would certainly raise the level of the situation.

In the latest update on the matter, however, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said that the government had not issued any law or rule banning the use of foreign smartphones, citing only some cybersecurity concerns.

This time, according to information from Bloombergit was the turn of the United States government issue a statement on the matter, which was released shortly before the Chinese spokesperson spoke. Second John Kirbyspokesperson for the US National Security Council, this supposed ban would be “a disproportionate retaliation” by the Chinese government:

It appears to be one of the types of aggressive and inappropriate retaliation once morest US companies that we have seen from the PRC [República Popular da China] in the past.

Whether this ban is official or not, it does not seem to extend to the general public, who continue to be able to use smartphones from foreign brands. Even the iPhone 15 line, presented last Tuesday, will be launched normally in China, which is one of the most important markets in the world for Apple.

It is worth remembering that the US government has already taken similar measures in the past once morest Chinese technology giants (such as Huawei and ZTE), which basically banned them from trading with American companies. The country has also blocked public employees from using TikTok on their work devices.
