It’s this week that Studios NetherRealm releases its new baby, and everything suggests that it’s a good vintage. As usual, we take a look at the first tests of Mortal Kombat 1 with press reviews.
First tests of Mortal Kombat 1
VGC – 5/5
This is one of the best story modes we’ve played in a Mortal Kombat game, and its decision to return to its roots really works in its favor.
Mortal Kombat 1 is the best Mortal Kombat game to date. It looks beautiful, has an awesome Story mode, its new Invasions mode will keep solo players busy, and above all, it’s an absolute blast to play. Absolutely essential for die-hard fans, inactive fans and newcomers.
VG247 – 4/5
Mortal Kombat 1 is an overall positive step in a new direction. I feel frustrated with Liu Kang’s decision to allow the game-as-a-service DNA to seep into his new universe, and I yearn for some of the features left behind (like Krypt). Mortal Kombat 1 ushers in a new era of MK that you can’t help but get excited for. NetherRealm, like the characters of its ultraviolent universe, looks straight into the eyes of the brave new world and into the future. Keeping your eyes in front of the holes can still be a challenge, however.
Screen Rant – 3,5/5
As the first Mortal Kombat game, Mortal Kombat 1 is a perfectly adequate, but not ideal, starting point (it would still be Mortal Kombat 2011). For gamers who just want to revisit their favorite characters, or for anyone who wants to hear Johnny Cage come up with good jokes like “That reminds me of a terrible B movie I was in called The Flesh Pits”, while walking around in a room that resembles the old MK level The Flesh Pits, this game will be a must buy. However, if you were hoping to see the Great Kung Lao or a whole new group of characters, Mortal Kombat 1 is not essential and brings very few truly new ideas to the table.
Videogamer – 9/10
With stunning next-gen visuals, nerve-wracking combos, and new Kameo fighters, Mortal Kombat 1 is less of a reboot and more of a return to accessible, yet fulfilling form.
NetherRealm plays to its strengths, sticking to familiar combos and excessive violence. The campaign features more of the explosive set pieces and deadly duels you’ve come to expect. Invasion mode is part of this strategy, which might prove very profitable if it receives updates with new equipment. The franchise has also made some strides in welcoming newcomers while also catering to older fans through its Kameo system. It’s a complete package, especially for Mortal Kombat fans. But it lacks the added punch of the Drive Gauge system and ambitious World Tour mode that Street Fighter 6 introduced this year.
