In September 2018, a bank in Wuhan suddenly reported to the police that an 80-year-old woman in the bank wanted to transfer RMB 3 million to a certain account. The bank clerk was worried that the old woman might have suffered from telecommunications fraud, so he hurriedly called the police. After the police clarified the situation, they discovered that the old woman, who wore 15 yuan (equivalent to regarding NT$66) tattered shoes and lived in a simple hut, was actually donating money to charity in her hometown. And the old woman turned out to be China’s first female airborne parachute jumper.

According to the “Toutiao Today” report, the old woman’s name was Ma Xu, who was born in 1933. She joined the military career in 1947 at the age of 14, and then traveled around with the army. During this period, she also met, got to know, and fell in love with her husband Yan Xueyong, and finally got married. Later, because of his outstanding performance, Ma Xu was sent to the First Military Medical University to study. After graduation, he was assigned to the Wuhan Military Region General Hospital, and even served as a logistics support worker for skydiving training.

At this time, Ma Xu thought, as a military doctor who might not parachute, how to protect the paratroopers who were parachuting. Therefore, despite repeated objections from his superiors, Ma Xu made up his mind and began to learn skydiving on his own. In the end, Ma Xu made his first official parachute jump in 1962, which not only made all the officers dumbfounded, but also allowed Ma Xu to fulfill his wish of “wherever the paratrooper jumps, I, the military doctor, will follow him.” Ma Xu also became China’s The first female paratrooper. In the next 20 years, Ma Xu parachuted as many as 140 times, making her the Chinese female soldier with the most parachute jumps.

After retiring, Ma Xu believed that paratroopers often injured their ankles due to landing too fast, so she and her husband began to design and develop. After more than 600 days, he developed an inflatable ankle that might effectively protect the paratroopers’ ankles. Ankles are not injured by high-speed impacts. In the end, even the airborne troops officially adopted Ma Xu’s designs, which made Ma Xu very happy.

As a military doctor, Ma Xu later developed the “Oxygen Supply Vest for Individual Soldiers”, wrote books such as “Physiological Pathology of Airborne Soldiers” and “Basics of Physical and Psychological Training of Airborne Soldiers”, and even published numerous medical papers on The quality of medical care and care in the troops clearly helps.

In addition to personally contributing to the army, Ma Xu, who has no father or mother and has been an orphan since childhood, thought regarding how he grew up relying on the “hundreds of meals” provided by his fellow villagers when he was a child, and he began to hope that he might make some contribution to his hometown. After discussing with her husband, he went to the bank in September 2018 to transfer the prize money for inventions and research, as well as pension and other expenses, and expressed that he wanted to transfer RMB 3 million to a donation account in his hometown.

However, due to Ma Xu’s age and the misunderstanding caused by the enthusiastic bank clerk, the bank clerk mistakenly believed that Ma Xu had suffered from telecommunications fraud. After a police investigation, it was discovered that Ma Xu wanted to donate money to his hometown to develop education in his hometown, so he asked the bank to help transfer the money and insisted on escorting Ma Xu and his wife back home. It was also at this time that the police learned that although Ma Xu and his wife had a huge sum of money, their quality of life might be described as “poor”. Not only did they not have decent electrical appliances at home, the house was also very simple. The clothes are very cheap and ordinary.

In such a living environment, Ma Xu and his wife still wanted to contribute to education in their hometown. After donating 3 million yuan, Ma Xu and his wife scraped together another donation of 7 million yuan. The total donation of 10 million yuan before and following has made a huge contribution to China, and their life is so poor. Such a huge contrast made Ma Xu and his wife instantly become the focus of discussion for many people.

After knowing that he had become the focus of everyone’s discussion, Ma Xu said, “I didn’t expect that such an ordinary thing that I might do would become a big deal in everyone’s eyes, and I feel very ashamed that I was given such a high honor.”
