In early 2009, actor Mammootty along with director Shaji N Karun came to the home of great poet Azhakath Padmanabhakurup in the south of Chavara to play the role of a tramp in the Kollam movie ‘Kuttisrank’. Mammootty played three characters namely Chavittunatakakaran, Tadiyaruppukaran and Kutisrank (boat driver). Most of it was shot in the south. ‘Kuttisrank’s story addresses the past. Actor and MLA M Mukesh’s father O Madhavan, mother Vijayakumari and sister Sandhya Rajendran gave life to many characters in theater and cinema. Rajeev Anchal, the director of ‘Guru’, who was considered for Oscar, Vidhu Vincent, who directed Manhole and Standup, and Anil V Nagendran, who directed ‘Vasantathi Kanalvahikal’, are the pride of Kollam. Umesh Omanakuttan, who wrote the story for Manhole and Stand Up, hails from Edayakkad. Director Lenin Rajendran also made his debut in Kollam. By Classmates James Albert is a native of Thangassery. Ottakal Parakkadav in Thenmala was the location of many old movies. Chinnakada is the location of Kesavadev’s Oda movie. Balachandran Chullikad made his debut with Pokuveil directed by Aravindan and the locations are Shastamkota Lake and DB College. Adoor directed movies like Elipatthayam, Mukhamukham, Anantaram and Pyneum etc. location in Kollam, Shastamkota, Pattakadav and Thevalakara. Euk Yugasandhya directed by Madhu was shot at Shastamkota Venga Tharavat. Lenin Rajendran was shot in Chill Chitumala. Katapuzha became the stage for KG George’s Kolams. The location of Adoor’s flag-raising is Poruvahiya Peruviruthi hill. Premnaseer’s first love and Madhu’s Mazhakar were shot in Uliakov and Thikurishi’s Harishchandra Polayathod was shot in Chudukati. ‘Vasantath Kanalvahikal’, starring Samudrat Kani as P Krishnapillai, was shot in Sooranad Thek, Katangayam, Pataram and Pavumba. Last year’s films Jaya Jaya Jaya Jayahe and Teacher were completely set in the backdrop of Kollam.
