The Secretary of State for Digitalization, Mathieu Michel, announced on Wednesday that he had asked the Belgian Institute of Postal Services and Telecommunications (BIPT) to analyze the “potential dangerousness” of the iPhone 12, an Apple phone withdrawn from sale in France due to exceeding the limit values on the electromagnetic waves emitted.

“As Secretary of State for Digitalization, it is my duty to react and ensure that all citizens of the Kingdom are safe and protected from any potential danger. Health is an issue that must never be neglected. This is why I quickly contacted the BIPT, in order to ask them to analyze the potential dangerousness of the product proposed by Apple,” he said in a press release.

“To support my request which I consider urgent, I asked to examine all the devices of the Apple group as well as other brands subsequently, to analyze the electromagnetic waves emitted by the devices with regard to the European regulations in force and to propose corrective measures with a view to possible compliance”, added Mr. Michel (MR).

He assured that he would ask the BIPT “to act effectively” if the analysis reveals a possible danger to health.

In France, the National Frequency Agency (ANFR) asked Apple on Tuesday to withdraw the Iphone 12 from the French market as of September 12, indicating that this phone released in 2020 exceeds 1.74 watts per kilogram (W/ kg) the regulatory limit value.
