After a two-week search, the murderer, who was considered extremely dangerous, was caught.
Although he was repeatedly spotted, a large number of police and judicial authorities were unable to find him for a long time.
While fleeing, 34-year-old Danelo Cavalcante also acquired a rifle.
The murderer Danelo Cavalcante, who has been on the run for two weeks and is considered extremely dangerous, was arrested on Wednesday by a SWAT team, as the New York Post reports. Details will become known later this evening (Swiss local time).
On August 31st, convicted murderer Danelo Cavalcante succeeded Escape from Chester County Prison in the US state of Pennsylvania, where he was to serve a life sentence. The 34-year-old, described as extremely jealous and uncontrollable, brutally killed his girlfriend with 38 knife stabs in front of their two small children in April.
The Brazilian native, who is also wanted in his home country for a homicide in 2017, copied another inmate’s method and climbed it Prison walls through a kind of shaft, supporting himself with his hands and feet on the opposite walls and climbing to the roof in a “crab walk”. From there he climbed fences secured with barbed wire and escaped. It wasn’t until an hour later that he was discovered missing and a major manhunt was launched.
Cavalcante’s artistic escape was captured by a surveillance camera.
Since then, Cavalcante has been on the run. He was filmed several times by private surveillance cameras, but he always managed to pull his head out of the tightening noose. The first time he was wearing a white T-shirt and a backpack, later he was photographed without a shirt. According to the authorities, on September 9th he stole a white Ford Transit van, and that same evening he was captured by a work colleague’s door camera from before. The picture shows him clean shaven wearing a green hoodie.
Garage owner shot Cavalcante
The next day the van was found abandoned behind a barn. And once more a day later he showed up unexpectedly in a garage in East Nantmeal Township, around 30 kilometers from the prison. Cavalcante surprised the homeowner, who happened to be in the garage. Although he shot the convict several times, he managed to wield a .22 caliber rifle equipped with a telescope and flashlight. He stole a pair of work shoes from another farm, which probably didn’t make the search any easier.
Cavalcante had previously been classified as extremely dangerous. Armed, he became even more dangerous. Lt. Col. George Bivens of the Pennsylvania State Police says: “He has already killed two people. I would guess he’s desperate enough to use that weapon.” The reward for information leading to his capture was $25,000, and over 500 officers from the state police, FBI, ATF and the US Marshal Service hunted him for two weeks. Search dog teams, thermal imaging cameras and helicopters were also used.
The population was urgently warned regarding Cavalcante, streets were closed several times and schools were closed. The population was also warned regarding the fugitive via so-called reverse 911 calls. They should lock their doors and windows, lock their vehicles if possible and leave their homes as little as possible.
