Top Candidates for the German National Team Coach Position: Nagelsmann, Van Gaal, Kuntz, and Glasner

“We will sit down together in the next few days,” said sports director Rudi Völler and put a little pressure on the search committee: “My wish would be that we can introduce the new coach by the next international match period in October.”

An overview of realistic candidates for the position of national coach of the German national team:

JULIAN NAGELSMANN (36, still under contract with FC Bayern)

The former Munich player is probably the association’s first point of contact; according to “Sport1”, the DFB is said to have already contacted him. Rudi Völler calls Nagelsmann an “absolute top trainer”. Nagelsmann is still under contract with the German record champions until 2026.

“It certainly wouldn’t fail at FC Bayern,” said Honorary President Uli Hoeneß. Bayern would be happy to get Nagelsmann off their payroll. But it is questionable whether Nagelsmann will now decide on a national team. “I believe that at 36 years old he is not yet at the point where he would rather want and need daily work with a team,” said record national player Lothar Matthäus.

LOUIS VAN GAAL (72, vereinslos)

The Dutchman recently expressed skepticism because no foreigner has ever held the position of national coach. But Bernd Neuendorf brushed these concerns aside. “We’re not slamming any doors. We expressly allow this option,” said the DFB President.

Van Gaal led FC Bayern to a double and the final of the Champions League in 2010. The 72-year-old is not an easy character, but his former players Philipp Lahm and Bastian Schweinsteiger still rave regarding him.

“He has already won many big battles. The team also needs a personality who has big shoulders,” said ARD expert Schweinsteiger.

STEFAN KUNTZ (60, national coach Türkiye)

Evil tongues would say that, in contrast to Hansi Flick with Germany (1:4), the 1996 European champions with Turkey only lost 2:4 once morest Japan.

But that doesn’t help Kuntz. He is under criticism. In contrast to Nagelsmann and van Gaal, he would be a cheaper solution for the cash-strapped DFB. Kuntz is a popular figure with internal knowledge of the association and is valued.

He led the U21s to two European Championship titles and demonstrated an outstanding knack for talent, even if his 2021 Olympic mission failed in the preliminary round.

OLIVER GLASNER (49, without a club)

The Austrian is considered an excellent specialist, won the Europa League with Eintracht Frankfurt and was previously successful with Wolfsburg.

Völler’s job description (“a German-speaking national coach” and “an absolute top man”) applies to Glasner.

If the DFB is seriously interested, they have to hurry: Glasner is being linked to Olympique Lyon.
