Raising Awareness of Risks in Cosmetic Surgery Abroad: Tragic Death of 31-Year-Old Brit Highlights the Importance of Informed Decision-Making

A 31-year-old British woman who died in Turkey following buttock augmentation plastic surgery was misinformed regarding the risks of the procedure, according to the coroner in charge of the investigation, which deplores numerous avoidable deaths each year.

“I am concerned that patients are not informed of the risks or mortality rate associated with such surgery. I have no authority over hospitals in Türkiye […] But the danger that our citizens continue to travel abroad for such procedures persists,” said Jacqueline Lake, the senior coroner for Norfolk, at the conclusion of her inquest, reported by “The Independent” on Wednesday.

On November 19, 2022, Melissa Kerr reportedly died of a pulmonary embolism following traveling to Turkey to get a Brazilian butt lift, a cosmetic procedure that serves to increase the volume of the buttocks.

During the surgery, which removes fat from the body to reinject it into the posterior, a quantity of injected fat entered a vein, blocking his pulmonary artery, according to the coroner’s findings.

However, according to its investigation, the thirty-year-old would not have been adequately informed beforehand of the risks associated with the surgery, the mortality rate of which would exceed “probably one in 4,000”, according to the cosmetic surgeon and consultant Simon Withey.

“It’s entirely possible [que si les risques lui avaient été expliqués] before being financially committed, she would not have done it,” he added, according to what the British media noted.

For the coroner, who deplores a “high number of patient deaths in similar conditions”, it is clear that many are not aware of the risks associated with cosmetic surgery abroad.

“I fear that there will be future deaths, and I am of the opinion that future deaths can be avoided thanks to better information,” she would have insisted, proposing to make a report to the Secretary of State to Health to offer possible solutions in prevention, according to “The Independent”.
