The United Nations is also mobilizing help for the surviving people following the devastating storm in Libya that left thousands dead. We are working with local, national and international partners “to provide urgently needed humanitarian assistance to the people in the affected areas,” said a spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres in New York. A UN team is on site.
We are cooperating with the authorities to identify needs and support ongoing relief measures. While rescuers and relatives search for survivors, around 10,000 people were recently missing, according to the Red Cross. According to one of the two rival governments in the civil war country, around 5,200 people were killed. This number might not initially be confirmed independently.
“At this time, our thoughts are with the thousands of people affected in their communities and we stand in solidarity with all people in Libya during this difficult time,” said Guterres’ spokesman Stéphane Dujarric. The United Nations-recognized government in the Libyan capital Tripoli has meanwhile pledged millions in aid for the disaster areas – even though it does not control the area.
