Tokyo: Dozens of crocodiles have been rescued from a breeding farm in southern China following flooding caused by Typhoon Haikui, Chinese officials said. A lake in Maoming, Guangdong Province, overflowed, killing 75 crocodiles. While some were recaptured, others were shot or electrocuted by local authorities for “security reasons”. Chinese state media reports eight reptiles have been caught so far. Meanwhile, villagers near the lake have been advised to stay at home. Typhoon Haikui has been raging in South Asia for more than a week, hitting China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan. Seven people have been killed and three are missing in southern China following the typhoon triggered landslides and floods. Sixty-nine adult and six juvenile crocodiles survived the flood, according to the Maoming Bureau of Emergency Management. No casualties were reported, but officials acknowledged that some of the reptiles were still in deep water. Emergency services have been launched using sonar equipment to locate them. It is currently under control, but the number of escaped crocodiles is slightly higher,” a staff member of the district emergency bureau told state-run newspaper Dashong Daily.
