Did Andréane Ouellet Die from a Fall Down the Stairs? Shocking Details Revealed in Murder Trial

(Joliette) Did Andréane Ouellet die while falling down the stairs while drunk? Did she have an “overdose”? This is what Alexandre Boudreau-Chartrand told 9-1-1 when he discovered his partner’s body. His powerful appeal was presented to the jury Tuesday on the second day of his murder trial.

“I think my wife overdosed and then she fell down the stairs. […] Yes, quickly there! I think she took her meds and then overdosed. She tumbled down the steps, then she vomited blood…” breathes Alexandre Boudreau-Chartrand, visibly panicked on the other end of the line.

The 38-year-old man is accused of having perpetrated the second degree murder of Andréane Ouellet, on September 27, 2021, in their family residence in Saint-Donat. According to the Crown, the mother of five’s death was caused by “multiple head trauma.”

According to the prosecution’s theory, Alexandre Boudreau-Chartrand was “upset” at his partner’s inability to maintain her sobriety and had difficulty accepting her “infidelities”. The couple also had several “quarrels”, especially regarding Andréane Ouellet’s alcohol consumption.

During the 9-1-1 call, Alexandre Boudreau-Chartrand can be heard calling for help and performing resuscitation maneuvers for several minutes under the supervision of the emergency services employee. He told her that he had left home regarding an hour ago.

This call allows us to learn more regarding that fateful day. Alexandre Boudreau-Chartrand explains to a police officer towards the end of the call that Andréane Ouellet was a “gerlot” that morning. According to the accused, his partner “failed on the stairs” for the first time.

“I heard someone tumbling down the stairs once. I arrived in the stairwell […] I brought her into bed. […] After that, I went to bed. I had a meeting with […]she was sleeping, she didn’t come,” says the accused.

In a barely audible segment of the call, Alexandre Boudreau-Chartrand repeats these words from his partner: “It’s over, you then me”. The context, however, remains unclear. The accused adds during the call that his partner had attempted suicide a month earlier.

The accused was ‘sad’ and ’emotional’

Before the 9-1-1 call, Alexandre Boudreau-Chartrand was absent to go to a very important meeting for the couple, the content of which cannot be revealed. The absence of Andréane Ouellet obviously caught the attention of those present, recounted a Crown witness.

“We asked him where Madame Ouellet was, he replied that Madame was sleeping. That she was absent, that she had consumed alcohol during the weekend, that there had been conflicts, that he had learned that she had been unfaithful to him during his stay in a shelter. accommodation in June,” testified the woman, whose identity cannot be revealed.

The woman remembers that Alexandre Boudreau-Chartrand was “emotional” during the meeting and that he had arrived 12 minutes in advance, contrary to his habits. “He seemed sad,” she repeated. Her clothes were very “clean,” she told the jury.

Leaving the meeting an hour later, the woman discussed Andréane Ouellet’s suicidal risks with another person. “We had concerns. It’s weird. […] We discussed it,” she said.

We learn from this testimony that Andréane Ouellet stayed two weeks in a shelter in June 2021. This center accommodates homeless people who must “get their act together,” summarized the witness. The couple continued to see each other followingward.

In cross-examination, the woman indicated that Andréane Ouellet might be “aggressive” towards objects, while Alexandre Boudreau-Chartrand spoke “more denigrating on a psychological level”. He “regularly” blamed his partner for his drinking problems.

Three days before the death of Andréane Ouellet, the witness remembers having noticed a scar on the victim’s arm. This one also had a black toe.

“Did you notice bruises all over his legs?” », asked the defense lawyer. “No,” replied the witness.

Around fifteen Crown witnesses are expected in the coming weeks in this trial which is taking place before Judge Eric Downs. The trial continues Tuesday followingnoon at the Joliette courthouse.
