Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – Coastal security authorities in Libya announced, on Tuesday, the death of 145 Egyptians in the floods that struck the country, and it is believed that the number of victims exceeds thousands of people.
The General Administration of Coastal Security in the Libyan city of Tobruk said that the bodies of 145 Egyptians arrived at the Tobruk morgue “to wash them and begin sending them to their families,” according to a statement published by the administration on its Facebook page, on Tuesday.
The Coastal Security Administration in Tobruk added that “all deaths were deported to the Arab Republic of Egypt.”
On Tuesday, Egypt announced the launch of an air bridge to Libya in order to transport medical and food relief equipment, in addition to rescue crews to confront the repercussions of Hurricane Daniel, which swept eastern Libya.
The Egyptian army spokesman said, in a statement, that “three military planes were sent carrying medical and food supplies, and 25 rescue crews equipped with all the necessary technical equipment, in addition to another plane to carry out the medical evacuation of the martyrs and the injured.”
The spokesman added that an Egyptian military delegation headed by Lieutenant General Osama Askar, Chief of Staff of the Egyptian Army, arrived in Libya to coordinate and discuss ways to provide logistical support and urgent humanitarian relief in cooperation with the competent Libyan agencies and institutions.
The Egyptian presidency also declared a state of mourning for 3 days for the victims of the Libyan floods and the Moroccan earthquake.
During a press conference in Geneva, on Tuesday, Tamer Ramadan, head of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies delegation in Libya, said, “The death toll is huge and there are regarding 10,000 missing people,” adding: “The death toll is huge, it may reach thousands, but not “We have a specific number at the moment.”
