YOKOHAMA, Japan – Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. this year presented the Sustainability Seminar 2023focusing on two key themes: Circular Economy and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). Industry experts participated in panel discussions covering key trends and themes.
Guided by its corporate purpose of “driving innovation to enrich people’s lives,” Nissan puts sustainability at the heart of its business, with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality across all of its operations and throughout the life cycle of its products by 2050.
“We live in a world that requires immediate transformative actions to lead us to a more sustainable society”, states the Chief Sustainability Officer from Nissan, Joji Tagawa. “To address this pressing crisis, we must all contribute to the solution. Our 2023 Sustainability Seminar is an opportunity for industry-leading experts to share knowledge and experience, contributing to our understanding of what we can do today and how we can plan for a more sustainable future.”
To maximize the value provided to customers and society, Nissan has adopted the concept of circular economy, in addition to developing systems for efficient and sustainable use of resources throughout the life cycle. Nissan uses recycled materials and reuses vehicles at the end of their useful life, with efforts to make effective use of resources through planning from the design, purchasing and production phases. Additionally, the company uses a closed-loop recycling system to produce certain components for its vehicles. This system helps reduce CO2 emissions, promotes the use of materials that do not depend on new mineral resources and reduces factory waste.
Furthermore, Nissan considers Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) to play a key role in the company’s sustainable growth. Through training and seminars on topics such as LGBTQ+, unconscious bias and diversity in leadership, Nissan aims to create a diversity mindset and a more inclusive workplace. Employing people from more than 100 nationalities, the company intends to expand initiatives such as groups of volunteer employees, as it advances with its DEI actions.
Nissan also announced that it has globally adhered to the UN Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs). This demonstrates the Japanese automaker’s commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment.
In late July, Nissan published its first ESG Report, which outlines the company’s priorities, policies and results in the critical areas of environment, society and corporate governance. Nissan intends to publish its first integrated report at the end of March 2024. Through these publications, the brand continues to disclose its policies and performance in the ESG area in a transparent and timely manner.
