An error by the Outaouais Integrated Health and Social Services Center (CISSSO) contributed to the death of a 28-year-old young man. He was reportedly administered five times the dosage recommended by the emergency physician. This is what the report from coroner Francine Danais reveals.
The victim, Benoît Lauzon, first arrived by ambulance at the emergency room of Hull hospital on the evening of November 2, 2021 for breathing difficulties. He was then diagnosed with sepsis secondary to pneumonia.
Antibiotics are administered to him intravenously, but he reacts badly and has convulsions. Benoît suffered from epilepsy in addition to having Down syndrome and an intellectual disability; a condition which did not allow him to communicate his discomfort, according to the coroner.
On the morning of November 4, the emergency doctor prescribed him 1 mg of Ativan, a central nervous system depressant, since he was agitated. Ultimately, 5 mg will be administered to him by mistake. Benoît’s condition deteriorates rapidly.
The young man is in respiratory distress, his heart rate accelerates and he falls into a comatose state. Benoît Lauzon died a few hours later.
Without being able to conclude that this was the only reason, the coroner’s report concluded that the overdose administered to him contributed to his death.
