At the beginning of August, just over 2,000 Walloon households were receiving the housing waiting allowance (AAL), monthly financial assistance granted by the Region, since January 1, 2023, to households with precarious incomes waiting for social housing for more than 18 months and forced to rent privately, said Walloon Housing Minister Christophe Collignon on Tuesday, while the draft decree modifying the Walloon Sustainable Housing Code was being examined in parliament.
Some 1,200 applications were rejected because they did not meet the conditions for granting the allowance. A little over 650 applications are being processed and 4,700 applications are incomplete and awaiting the necessary information from the applicants. Finally, 3,000 requests have remained unanswered for more than 2 months. A massive sending of reminder letters was carried out for these files at the end of August 2023, detailed the minister.
According to the latter, the housing waiting allowance has already provided “significant” assistance to many families waiting for social housing. It is therefore “imperative to continue to support and develop such initiatives to guarantee access to decent housing for all”.
