Peugeot 3008: The Game-Changing Electric SUV with Unmatched Autonomy and Cutting-Edge Technology

Although at the end of its life, the 3008 remains one of Peugeot’s bestsellers. And a particularly important model because it is at the heart of the most promising segment in Europe. However, Peugeot does not hesitate to take the risk of offering it exclusively with an electric engine, for the European launch in any case. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions will come a little later “depending on the markets” as well as a gasoline engine “dedicated to international markets”. Not for us, then.

Whether aesthetically or in terms of engines, the Peugeot 3008 steps up its game! ©Peugeot

Nine above, nine below

The French SUV is the first to be built on the brand new STLA Medium platform from the Stellantis group, to which Peugeot belongs. A technical choice which allows it to push electrification to a new stage for the entire group, with technologies, batteries and engines much more generous than the current Jeep Avenger, Peugeot e-308 and other Opel Astra Electric.

As confirmed by the first official image revealed a few days ago, the new model adopts a much more streamlined style, a “fastback” as Peugeot calls it. A silhouette that adopts Peugeot’s new aesthetic language, even more assertive than previously. But above all it allows us to take care of aerodynamics, which is particularly important to guarantee low consumption, especially in terms of electricity. As a result, the new model displays a Cx (Drag Coefficient) of only 0.28, one of the very best values in the category.

On board, in addition to the panoramic i-Cockpit and its 21-inch curved screen already announced, the 3008 is generous in space, including a 520-liter trunk. To which are added 17 storage spaces in the passenger compartment for a total capacity of 34 liters.

Two batteries, three motors

Where Peugeot hits hard is in terms of autonomy. Three versions will be offered: two-wheel drive (210 hp) or four-wheel drive (320 hp) with a 73 kWh battery, which already promise 525 km (WLTP, approval pending). That is already practically as much as a Tesla Model Y Grande Autonomie (533 km) or an ID.4 Pro (529 km), although with slightly more generous batteries. But above all, the Frenchman is topping his range with a 230 hp Long Range version promising 700 km thanks to its 98 kWh battery!

In both cases, charging can be done at 11 kW in alternating current – as standard – and up to 160 kW in direct current at a public terminal. A value within the norm; Peugeot is paying here for its choice of maintaining a 400V architecture rather than opting for 800V, like Kia or Hyundai in particular.

Technological

Of course, the E-3008 receives its share of technological innovations, including adjustable energy recovery in three levels via the paddles on the steering wheel. The multimedia is enriched with a Trip Planner, which is responsible for automatically calculating the charging stops necessary to arrive at your destination, or the possibility of powering or charging an external electrical device via the Vehicle-to-load function.

Driving assistants have also taken a leap forward, notably strengthening semi-autonomous driving capabilities. The E-3008 is now capable of changing lanes automatically, and should generate its share of alerts to the driver, notably when the speed limit changes, when they unintentionally cross a line, or even if their attention drops.

This new Peugeot E-3008 therefore looks promising. Including those who consider the range of an electric car too low compared to its gasoline or even diesel equivalent. But there remains of course a major unknown when predicting its success: its price! It will only be known upon marketing, scheduled for next spring.
