Fiedler: “The ÖVP and the Greens must finally move from talking to doing when it comes to inclusion and disability rights.”
Vienna (OTS) – “The recommendations for action published today by the UN Committee of Experts confirm what was already indicated during the meetings: Austria is failing to implement the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities at all levels,” says Fiona Fiedler, NEOS spokeswoman for people with disabilities. “This testimony is damning, but unfortunately not surprising. If a federal government just talks a lot but doesn’t do anything, nothing will change, at least not for the better.”
What is particularly bad is that there is not only a standstill in the field of education, but even regression, according to Fiedler: “The UN expert committee quite rightly criticizes the fact that Austria is once more increasingly relying on the separation of special schools and regular schools instead of on inclusion. When will the other parties finally understand that inclusive education is not a nice-to-have, but simply a human right and the cornerstone of a successful inclusive society?!”
Austria must now immediately move from talking to doing, said Fiedler. “What we most urgently need is data, which is currently lacking in all areas, and financing from a single source via an inclusion fund. And quickly – because the UN’s recommendations for action are mandatory Requirements that Austria must implement by the next state review.”
