Austria’s teachers have higher incomes than their colleagues in other comparable countries, shows the OECD study “Education at a Glance” published on Tuesday. Educators of all ages sometimes earn significantly more over their entire careers than elsewhere. At the same time, however, they receive less than other full-time employees with a university degree; this gap is larger in Austria than in other countries.

For elementary school teachers, the annual salary following ten years of employment (adjusted for purchasing power, data from 2022) is around $52,600. The OECD average is just under 46,800 and the EU25 average is only 42,700. The difference is similarly high for teaching staff at secondary level 1 (especially middle school and lower secondary school level) with 55,100 US dollars (OECD: 48,600, EU25: 44,400) and the upper secondary school levels with 59,900 US dollars (OECD: 50:800, EU25 : 46,000).

Compared to other academics, teachers in this country earn lower incomes. Primary school teaching staff earn 78 percent of academics in other sectors, 86 percent for teachers at secondary level 1 and around 92 percent for upper secondary school teachers. On average in the OECD, the gap is slightly smaller at 87 to 95 percent.

In international comparison, despite the current teacher shortage, there are a relatively large number of teaching staff in the system in this country: In Austria, purely mathematically, there are twelve students per teacher in primary school and nine students in secondary school (with its specialist teacher system). In contrast, the OECD and EU25 averages are 15 (primary school) and 13 (secondary level), respectively.

Accordingly, the salary costs of teaching staff per student in Austria are higher than those in other countries: the OECD has calculated costs of 5,400 US dollars for primary school and 8,300 US dollars for secondary school level 1 in 2022. The OECD average is 3,600 and 4,400, respectively, and the EU25 average is 3,700 and 4,700 US dollars.
