London: British scientist Ian Wilmut, known as the father of cloning, has died. He is the one who led the team that created a mammal named Dolly through cloning. His death was confirmed by the University of Edinburgh.
He was suffering from Parkinson’s disease. Ian Wilmut had been ill for several years.
In 1996, a team led by Ian at the Keith Campbell Animal Sciences Research Institute in Scotland gave birth to a sheep named Dolly through cloning.
” He led efforts to develop cloning, or nuclear transfer, techniques to create genetically modified sheep. These efforts gave birth to Megan and Morag in 1995. “These experiments led to the birth of Dolly in 1996,” said a statement released by the University of Edinburgh.

The name Dolly was given to the sheep following the singer Dolly Parton. Dolly the sheep is a mammal cloned from a cell through a process called somatic cell nuclear transfer.
The DNA is removed from the sheep’s egg following it is taken. It replaces DNA taken from the udder tissue of a sheep that died years ago. The egg is experimented with electricity to grow like a fertilized embryo. Sperm is not required in this process.

Although it has done wonders in the field of science, this breakthrough has opened up some ethical debate. Scientists have raised fears that replicas of the living or the dead might be made. Mainstream scientists have also said that this method is very dangerous.
Ian Wilmut was born near Stratford-upon-Avon. He later joined the University of Nottingham to study. He had planned to study agriculture before moving into animal science.
Later he came to the University of Edinburgh. This was in 2005. He retired from the university in 2012. He was knighted in 2008.
Edinburgh University Vice-Chancellor Peter Mathieson described Ian Wilmut as a titan of science. Matheson added that he was able to change the course of science through cloning experiments.
“His breakthrough fueled all the advances in regenerative medicine today,” Mathieson said.
