At the end of July, a heavily mutated offshoot of the omicron coronavirus was discovered in Denmark. The BA.2.86 variant has more than 35 mutations in key areas of the virus, according to a Archyde.com report. The World Health Organization (WHO) classified the variant, also known as “Pirola,” as one of seven “variants under surveillance.” Scientists are closely monitoring the new variant, but thanks to widespread immunization, another devastating wave is not expected. BA.2.86 has not yet been detected in Germany.

As the Statista graphic with data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) shows that the corona incidences are low throughout Germany. The number of reported Covid-19 cases per 100,000 inhabitants is between four and eleven, depending on the federal state. The infection ratio is highest in Hamburg and Bremen, Baden-Württemberg has the fewest cases per 100,000 inhabitants (as of September 6, 2023).

The fact that even newer variants rarely cause severe disease in Germany is also due to the widespread vaccination protection in the Federal Republic. According to the Robert Koch Institute, 192,248,678 corona vaccinations were administered in Germany between the end of December 2020 and the beginning of August 2023 – 75 percent of these were variants of the BioNTech/Pfizer vaccine, followed by the manufacturers Moderna (16 percent) and AstraZeneca (7 percent). . 99.7 percent of vaccine doses were administered by the end of last year. The majority of the approximately 659,000 vaccine doses used since then are fourth and fifth vaccinations. In contrast, the RKI only counted around 27,000 first and second vaccinations.

In our weekly column we present numbers, curves and diagrams from technology and science.

The statistics on side effects kept by the Paul Ehrlich Institute (PEI) recorded 338,333 suspected cases by the end of March – of which 55,486 had serious side effects. For the most commonly used BioNTech vaccine (Comirnaty), unadjusted, 38,147 suspected cases of serious side effects correspond to a reporting rate of 0.28 suspected cases of serious side effects per 1,000 vaccinations. The high proportion of women is striking. 69 percent of the total cases affect female people, while the number of serious cases is 57 percent.

The PEI also publishes figures on the outcome of reported adverse reactions. Permanent damage following vaccination was reported in 5.4 percent of cases. In 0.98 percent of cases (n = 3,315 cases), a fatal outcome was reported at varying intervals. Of these, the scientists rate 127 deaths as consistent – in the sense of the WHO definition – “with a causal connection to the respective COVID-19 vaccination”.
