A powerful earthquake struck regarding 80 kilometers from the southern city of Marrakech in Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains, killing more than 2,000 people, turning homes and buildings into rubble and terrifying residents.
Morocco has a history of serious earthquakes, and the one that occurred shortly following 11:00 pm on Friday was the strongest to hit the area in more than a century. The full extent of casualties and damage is not yet known.
“It didn’t last long,” said one person who experienced the earthquake in Amizmiz, regarding 30 miles southwest of Marrakech, “but it seemed like years.”
