Tech Industry Disconnect: Why Generation X is Losing Interest in Working for Major Tech Companies

Sandwiched between baby boomers and millennials, Generation X is known for being as tech-savvy as their younger counterparts. They even participated in the creation of the Internet and modern technological culture. Yet they are no longer excited regarding the prospect of working at a major company in the sector they helped build, according to a recent survey.

L’investigation was conducted by the company Qualtrics among 1,000 American tech employees. We learn that representatives of Generation X (born between 1965 and 1980) no longer aspire to work in the sector: only 37% of them want to be hired at a leading technology company. THE Millennials and members of Generation Z are twice as likely to want a career in digital technology (60%).

These results show to what extent workers are more demanding of their company, but more generally of the sector in which it operates. If we know that young people are very attached to the balance between professional and personal lives, their elders working in tech are even more so. Thus, 68% of members of Generation X declare that their job is not, in their eyes, that important in achieving their life goals, compared to 51% for millennials and 58% for Zs.
