The death toll from the devastating earthquake in Morocco has risen to 2,862. As the Interior Ministry announced on Monday evening, 2,562 injuries have been counted so far. Moroccan Justice Minister Abdel Latif Wehbe told Al-Arabiya that rescue workers were still having difficulty reaching remote villages in the mountains. The authorities have now set up field hospitals near the epicenter to treat the injured there.

The final death toll was still unclear, and the extent of the damage might not yet be quantified, Wehbe explained. The quake on late Friday evening was the worst in Morocco in decades. It had a magnitude of 6.8.

King Mohammed VI ordered three days of national mourning. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 300,000 people in Marrakech and surrounding areas are affected by the accident.
