On the third day following the severe earthquake, the number of victims rose to almost 2,500. At least as many were injured in the followingmath of the 6.8 magnitude tremors late Friday evening, and hundreds of people are still missing. However, help only reaches the victims in remote mountain villages slowly; landslides block the path through the Atlas Mountains. Morocco has so far only accepted offers of support from four countries. The argument for this extremely cautious approach was that lack of coordination would have a detrimental effect. Therefore, they initially “responded to the offers of support from the friendly countries of Spain, Qatar, Great Britain and the United Arab Emirates,” explained the Interior Ministry. Britain is in Morocco with 60 rescue experts and four search dogs, said British Ambassador Simon Martin. A special Spanish military unit with search dogs is also taking part. However, offers of help from other countries, including Austria, Germany and the USA, were not initially taken up.
