Release of Asylum Seekers from Home Sebrechts and Plans for Student Accommodation: Updates and Discussions with Federal and Municipal Authorities

This Monday, the Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration Nicole de Moor (CD&V), the mayor of Molenbeek Catherine Moureaux (PS) and alderwoman Françoise Schepmans (MR) announced the release of its occupants from the Home Sebrechts which currently houses some 350 asylum seekers in Molenbeek. The evacuation is planned for March next year to eventually accommodate student accommodation.

The agreement concluded to this effect between the federal and municipal authorities guarantees the organization of accommodation for the same number of asylum seekers in a more appropriate and smaller location in the municipality, indicated the mayor of the municipality during a press conference organized at the Municipal House.

Home Sebrechts had been temporarily adapted to accommodate Ukrainian refugees. He was then assigned to the reception of asylum seekers, not without generating tension between Fedasil and the municipality burned by this unconcerted change of assignment.

This new assignment exerted strong pressure on the surrounding neighborhood, among the most densely populated in the town which also houses a number of people in precarious situations, Catherine Moureaux recalled on Monday.

In recent months, tension reached its peak when the municipality began to evacuate this Fedasil center housing 440 asylum seekers, without benefiting from the cooperation of the federal agency. This had the sealed rooms reopened.

The municipality relied on two judgments which ruled in its favor by confirming a planning infraction committed by Fedasil.

Last August, Fedasil submitted an application for planning permission to officially transform the home into an accommodation center.

Like the mayor, Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration Nicolle De Moor welcomed on Monday the outcome of “intense and constructive discussions” in which the Brussels Region was also involved.
