With their debut and second album, the hooded men from the States were still in the tonal wake of their genre colleagues Mglathey were able to present themselves with their third album Djinn Stylistically speaking, it’s a bit free-floating, even if I wasn’t at all convinced by the record in terms of production.
But the idea of their corporate identity was there and therefore the curiosity for a new album was/is very great. How big will their development be, what are their goals?
Off to new paths
First of all, I have to point out the good production Twilight Nature point out, as mentioned, this was on the Djinn rather poor and is therefore already worth a plus point. The sound is clear and all instruments can be heard in a balanced manner. Reducing song running times also has a positive effect on usability and listening pleasure. In addition, the Americans from Portland have worked even more on their own style by integrating even more elements from classic heavy metal and juggling with the epic riffs typical of the genre.
What does the future hold?
The folk-like ones are particularly popular here The Dark (Winter), HEREwhich lyrically relates to the topic of epidemics, and the epic Retraversing the Void to put in the spotlight. The latter song in particular has moments of Maiden worship and classic rock and everything combined with the magic of Uda.
From my perspective, the band has now found their center and they know where they want to go from now on. If you still have doubts, you should listen to the last number. Through the Wax and through the Wane excels with a strong lead guitar and catchy hookline, resulting from clever songwriting. At the end you have to kneel down and raise your fist very high. Fantastic and sublime!
Conclusion
Fans, die Uda following Djinn lost, you can listen here once more with confidence. Twilight Nature is a hodgepodge of diverse song ideas that fits exactly into the American interpretation of black metal and, for me, opens a new chapter in their band’s history. The album grows with every listen and gets clean 8,5 / 10
