The President of the Spanish Football Federation announced Luis RubialesOn Sunday, he announced that he would resign from his position following kissing one of his country’s national team players during the celebration of winning the Women’s World Cup last month.
“I will do so (resign), yes, because I cannot complete my work,” Rubiales said in an interview with the “Piers Morgan Uncensored” program.
He added: “My family and friends say to me, ‘Luis, you have to focus on your dignity and get on with your life. If you don’t, you will hurt the people who love you and the sport you love.’
He pointed out, “Insisting on waiting and clinging (to the position)… will not provide anything positive, neither to the federation nor to Spanish football. Among other things, because there are de facto forces that will prevent my return.”
The 46-year-old Spanish Federation president sparked global outrage when he kissed midfielder Jenny Hermoso during the coronation ceremony following Spain’s 1-0 victory over England in the final in Sydney on August 20.
Rubiales was suspended by FIFA on August 26 from any activity related to football at the national and international levels for a period of 90 days and an investigation was opened once morest him.
In objection to what Rubiales did, the majority of the staff working for the Spanish women’s national team resigned, while the players from the “La Roja” team, who won the World Cup, announced that they would no longer play in the squad as long as the federation’s leadership did not change.
