Morocco Earthquake Updates: Latest News, Aid Efforts, and International Support

After Friday’s earthquake that left more than 2,000 dead and 2,059 injured, Morocco suffered a new earthquake this Sunday morning with a magnitude of 3.9 on the Richter scale. The European Union (EU) and G20 nations made financial aid available and a group of countries are collaborating with rescue teams in Marrakech, the most affected region, in the south of the African country.

The new earthquake occurred at 8 in the morning – local time – in a mountainous area in the south of the Marrakech-Safi region, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), with an epicenter 10 kilometers deep and halfway between the cities of Marrakech and Agadir. The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Observatory, for its part, recorded an even higher magnitude, 4.5 on the Richter scale.

According to the latest provisional report from the Moroccan authorities, the victims of Friday’s disaster, which reached magnitude 7, amount to 2,012 dead and 2,059 injured, of which 1,404 are in serious condition. It was the most powerful since there are records in this country.

This Sunday, Vice President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner expressed her support for the people of Morocco. “All our solidarity with the people of Morocco in this very difficult and painful moment,” she wrote on her social networks.

The international community offered financial aid and rescuers

Given the human losses and damage to buildings and infrastructure, the international community expressed its solidarity and Morocco accepted the help of four countries – Spain, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar – for the rescue work of people covered by the rubble. The neighboring country, on the other side of the Gibraltar peninsula, sent 56 rescuers and four search dogs

In the last few hours, different organizations expressed their availability of financial aid, such as the EU, the World Bank and several representatives of G20 countries. However, a Moroccan diplomatic source informed the EFE agency that, following accepting the participation of the last rescue teams, the Maghreb country does not currently need other types of help.

The Argentine Foreign Ministry, through the Argentine Agency for International Cooperation and Humanitarian Assistance – White Helmets (ACIAH), sent a formal and urgent offer of humanitarian aid. And the immediate deployment of the Medium Urban Search and Rescue Team (USAR) ARG 12 was made available to the authorities of the North African country, whose members have been trained and trained under the standards and norms of the International Search Operations Advisory Group and INSARAG Rescue. The offer reaches 28 experts who have the capabilities to carry out technical search, search using dogs, medical assistance and first aid, among other operations.

Pope Francis also expressed his solidarity with the “dear people of Morocco, hit by a devastating earthquake” and asked “that everyone’s concrete help can sustain the population in this tragic moment.”
