Emergency services continue to work to find survivors following the powerful earthquake that occurred Friday evening, the deadliest in more than 60 years in Morocco. More than 2,000 people have lost their lives, according to a final, still provisional report. Although the tremors were felt in a large part of the country, it was the central provinces that were most severely affected.

3:29 a.m.: from Washington to Algiers, solidarity with Morocco
The earthquake, which caused several thousand deaths in Morocco, sparked a surge of solidarity around the world, several countries and organizations offering their help to Rabat. The leaders of the 27 member countries of the European Union notably co-signed a letter to the King of Morocco Mohammed VIsaying they are “fully supportive” and “ready to help in any way that you (the king, editor’s note) deem useful”.

At least 2,012 people died and 2,059 were injured, including 1,404 in very serious condition, following a powerful earthquake which struck Morocco during the night from Friday to Saturday, causing enormous damage and sowing panic in Marrakech, a tourist hotspot, and several other cities, according to a new official report published Saturday evening. An assessment likely to worsen as research continues.
The International Red Cross alerted the international community to the importance of aid for Morocco, citing needs for “months or even years”.
