Surprising Saturday Shearing and Symbolic Ceremony at the Wallonia Festival

It is increasingly complicated for the president of the CCQN (College of Namur Neighborhood Committees), Étienne Dethier, to show imagination when handing over the keys for the Wallonia Festival following ten years. But he managed to surprise, this Saturday morning, his “public” composed above all of elected officials, members of the CCW, neighborhoods and a very small number of sympathizers. The ceremony, which officially marks the start of the Holidays, began with a well-known game: Questions for a champion with, in the background, the royal fanfare of Sainte-Cécile d’Assesse.

The principle of the game has been reworked with Namur style: 12 questions to discover each district and 12 others on centenarians asked to four groups. Each participant who answered the question correctly had the chance (or not) to drink a pèkèt. “I hope you had a good lunch, joked Benoît De Rue, host for the occasion. The game, lasting 45 minutes, allowed the mayor to hand over the keys to each district president as soon as the answer was found. This is the moment when the latter hold, in a symbolic way, full power. “I would like to be able to also entrust them with all the responsibilities that arise from this”, joked the mayor. After this fun part, the president of the CCQN took the floor for his traditional speech. Usually a more teasing moment. But this time, no spades. It was more of a speech to praise the qualities of the mayor. A sort of declaration of friendship where, last year, the CCQN offered a paving stone for Place Maurice Servais to Maxime Prévot due to the slowness of the construction site.

Would there definitely be no more current topic on which to tease the mayor, other than forgetting his iPad on a plane? It is clear that a joke or a dig at the anti-begging ordinance around shopping malls would have been bad form. There was still one element that was off the beaten track: we learned that, on Saturdays, between two meetings, he mows his lawn in a white shirt. “Thank you for the anecdotes which I am surprised that they come back to your earslaughed the mayor who closed the ceremony. I heard you say that your source was inexhaustible, that you already had enough for next year. I hope you have it for the next six years too!” To close the ceremony, the CCQN offered a final gift to the mayor: twelve medals bearing the image of the Namur districts.
