The French supermarket chain, Carrefour, is expected to begin warning of hidden price increases with stickers on a range of food products from next Monday. The labels that Carrefour will place on items including coffee, crackers, mayonnaise and iced tea will include: “Deflationary inflation: The weight of this product has been reduced and its price has increased.” The label will also show consumers how much the price of the product has increased. This step by Carrefour is consistent with the French government’s messages demanding that producers clearly state whether the contents of the package have been reduced.
French Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire recently said: “Some producers reduce the content of their products without changing the packaging and sometimes raise prices, and this is a scandal.” He added: “We will enshrine in a law in October the necessity of visually displaying the reduction in content when the packaging does not change.”
