This advance comes shortly following the world’s first transplant of a pig kidney into a human being. Scientists at the Guangzhou Institute of Biomedicine and Health have taken this step, but with a different goal. Although this promising advance is a fundamental step, it is still far from being used for kidney transplants. The kidneys were chosen because of their importance in transplantation and their rapid development. After 28 days, the cultured kidneys had reached the stage of renal development called mesonephros, marking a first in creation of hybrid organs in another species. For researchers, this is a revolutionary new approach in organ bioengineering.
However, challenges remain, notably competition between human and porcine cells. Scientists have worked on mechanisms to overcome this incompatibilityidentifying crucial factors to promote the formation of these hybrid organs. To achieve this breakthrough, the researchers used CRISPR technology to genetically modify pig embryos and human stem cells to facilitate their integration into pig embryos. Although this advancement raises hope for human organ transplantation in the future, years of research and optimization are still needed (source 1). The long-term objective is to create fully human organsbut this raises complex challenges. In the meantime, this technology might be valuable for studying human organ development and associated diseases.
