New research raises the question of whether ChatGPT prepares students for a smarter future or provides a generation that relies less on critical thinking because it is highly dependent on technology.
According to an Age of Learning survey on the K-12 education system, homeschool educators are 35% more likely to use ChatGPT in the educational process than school teachers.
However, both groups agree on the merits of using the tool to prepare children for careers focused on technology. Homeschooling educators begin to introduce ChatGPT to children around the age of 11.
According to research data, one in ten educators has already caught a student “cheating” with ChatGPT, raising the question of whether the tool makes teaching more accessible or facilitates academic dishonesty.
Of the total number of teachers interviewed, 98% express concerns regarding this type of use, citing the risk of students becoming increasingly dependent on technology and having increasingly limited critical thinking.
However, 57% consider ChatGPT to be highly beneficial for students with special needs, helping with accessibility issues. Although 44% of homeschool teachers use the tool, 95% of professionals have reservations regarding its use.
With the advancement of technology, artificial intelligence is increasingly present in all sectors, especially education. Teachers need to embrace technology and its benefits, while remaining vigilant so that critical thinking does not fall by the wayside.
