A Bronx man trying to get clean in a drug rehab died Tuesday, 11 days following being beaten in his sleep by his roommate, according to police.
Kyron Randall was arrested at BronxCare Life Recovery Center on Fulton Ave. near E. 169th St. in Morrisania, where he and the victim, Christopher Ames were being treated for addiction, according to witnesses and cops.
Randall, 30, was initially charged with assault, but more serious charges are expected.
The underlying dispute remains unclear, but Ames, 56, was punched so hard that he suffered several skull fractures, according to police.
“Nobody knows what the beef was over,” said a man who was in the rehab when the fight happened. He declined to be identified.
“I saw them take him out to the ambulance. It didn’t look good,” he told the Daily News. “Detectives, crime scene — everyone was there.”
The victim was taken to Lincoln Hospital in critical condition and died Tuesday from his injuries.
Randall, who is 6 feet tall and 225 pounds, is being held on Rikers Island on $25,000 bail. He was due back in court Wednesday.
Randall has one prior arrest, for setting a blaze in a Bronx NYCHA apartment arson in 2016. Residents of Clason Point Gardens on Lafayette Ave., including someone in the targeted apartment, escaped safely.
Randall, initially charged with arson, plead guilty to reckless endangerment and was sentenced to a year behind bars.
Another former patient in the detox center, who did not provide his name, said that the two men were in detention during their rehab.
“You don’t come and go on the rehab floor. You do your 28 days and then you get out,” he said. “It’s tough. You come here for help, and you end up dead.”
