Rockstar sold pirated versions of its own video games

It all started a few years ago when Rockstar decided to carry out a wave of porting its games to PC, by publishing them on the Steam platform. As explained by our colleagues from Journal du Geekthese ports seemed complicated following “multiple layers of DRM” in the game codes.

In a few words, a DRM is a program that protects a game once morest any modification, whatever it may be: aesthetic, technical and, including, piracy.

One of these DRMs applied to the PC version of a game had the task of verifying that the game’s installation disc was indeed an original and not a pirated copy. Except that problem: there is no installation disk when you download a PC version from the Steam platform. As a result, Rockstar put a pirated version of its own games… without removing the DRM.

Consequence: the game becomes completely unplayable on PC.
