Restoring the Francval Bridge After the Floods of 2021: A Resilient and Efficient Reconstruction Project

“Two years is long and short at the same time. It’s long because for local residents and people who used this route daily, we had to adapt. But short when we think back to the state of the bridge following the floods of July 2021″, commented the alderman in charge of Works Maxime Degey.

In fact, this bridge constitutes one of the structures that was most impacted by the floods of 2021: it had in fact been almost completely destroyed and the intervention promised to be heavy.

The authorities also took advantage of the disaster to make the building more resilient, by lifting the central pilaster which had blocked water during the floods.

“The day following the floods, the Works department did everything to restart the machine. With the appointment of a project author at the end of August 2021, who was able to quickly move forward on the 15 renovation projects. Then in spring 2022 , it was necessary to designate the companies in charge of the construction sites and that of the Francval bridge was able to begin in September 2022. We had planned a little less than a year of work. The timing is almost respected and given the scale of the construction site, we can only rejoice,” recalls the alderman.

The reopening of the bridge does not mean the end of the work. Certain interventions and finishes relating to the masonry joints under the bridge, the railing lighting and the lower LED strip still need to be carried out.

The work should be completed at the end of September or the beginning of October, for a total of 1.3 million euros.
