Space agencies of China and South Africa signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) program, according to the National Administration of China Space (CNSA).

The memorandum of understanding, marking South Africa’s formal participation in the ILRS programme, was signed earlier this month by the Chinese Ambassador to South Africa, Chen Xiaodong, on behalf of the CNSA, and Humbulani Mudau, head of the South African National Space Agency, said the CNSA in an announcement on its website.

South Africa’s participation shows that cooperation between China and South Africa extends from near-Earth space to the exploration of the moon as well as deep space, which will contribute to the development of space science and technology between the two countries, according to the announcement.

The two parties will conduct close cooperation in the areas of demonstration, technical implementation, operation and application of the ILRS program, as well as education and training thereon.

Moreover, under the BRICS cooperation on remote sensing satellite constellation, the two space agencies cooperated on the exchange and application of remote sensing data, as well as satellite ground stations.
