Starfield is finally released and thousands of players are exploring the new universe of Bethesda aboard personalized ships, in the company of carefully recruited companions and following promises of allegiances to many factions which only bind those who believe in them. So far, the game seems to be a great critical success and is already the best launch of a Bethesda game.
There are certainly some fierce criticisms being heard, but they seem to come from people who were expecting a No Man’s Sky or a Star Citizen and ended up with a traditional RPG from Bethesda, lo and behold.
However, some disappointments are legitimate, particularly given the ambition of the title and the large size of the procedurally generated areas on the planets explored. Among which is the absence of a vehicle to facilitate travel once you leave your ship, like the NOMAD in Mass Effect: Andromeda for example. Should we expect their arrival soon? This is unfortunately unlikely.
The NOMAD of ME: Andromeda, customizable and visible in the hold of your ship.
The executive director of Bethesda, Todd Howardanswered this question during a recent interview for Bloomberg:
“It’s something we considered. We were going to do space exploration, we were going to make planets; From the moment you add vehicles it changes the gameplay. By focusing on the fact that you are on foot when leaving your ship, this allows us to really build an experience, because we know how quickly players discover things. You have a vehicle though, you have your spaceship. Then, once on the surface, you have a jetpack that is upgradeable, and obviously planets with different gravity levels, which makes this experience unique. »
We are very curious to discover the future content that the Californian studio is cooking up for Starfield, but unfortunately we must face the facts: the addition of a terrestrial exploration vehicle seems unlikely, even if not impossible according to the feedback collected by the studio. Which is not surprising in itself as Bethesda has no experience in developing drivable vehicles, with the exception of horses from the Elder Scrolls games whose legendary agility we know.
However, adding a vehicle means modeling varieties of models, programming its behavior, coding its use by the AI or at least the reaction of the AI to the vehicle, etc., a colossal job which would require rethinking several aspects of gameplay of the game. So there is a greater chance of ending up exploring the world of Starfield with space horses than with a NOMAD.
