A police officer shot and killed a 27-year-old man in his car, according to images of the incident which occurred in August, published Friday by the prosecution. The images show the police officer getting out of his car, walking up to the young man’s car and shooting several times at close range through the window.
Philadelphia police initially shared other information regarding how the incident unfolded. She notably indicated that the man had been shot outside his car, following stabbing the police officer. According to law enforcement, the victim had attracted their attention with reckless driving maneuvers and the officers then followed her.
The officer who fired the gun turned himself in Friday. He now faces charges including manslaughter, the prosecution said. Prosecutor Larry Krasner says the images speak for themselves and yet the officer’s lawyer called the charges once morest his client false. After the incident, the police officer was immediately suspended.
Deadly police violence is increasingly common in the United States. The death of George Floyd three years ago has become the symbol of this. In May 2020, this 46-year-old African American man died during a brutal police intervention in Minneapolis. Video footage shows how the unarmed man was held on the ground while police officer Derek Chauvin held his knee on the back of George Floyd’s neck for many minutes, while he said he might no longer breathe.
