Arnaud De Lie (Lotto Dstny) won the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec (WorldTour), a one-day race contested over 201.6 kilometers in Canada, on Friday. At 21, he achieved his first WorldTour success following a long sprint, ahead of the New Zealander Corbin Strong (Israel-Premier Tech) and the Australian Michael Matthews (Jayco-AlUla).
Mauri Vansevenant (Soudal Quick-Step) stood out by taking the breakaway which formed very early in the race. The Czech Matias Vacek (Lidl-Trek), the Italian Gianmarco Garofoli (Astana Qazaqstan) and the Spaniard David Lozano (Novo-Nordisk) accompanied him in this epic around the 12.6 kilometer loop covered 16 times with the Côte des Glacis (0.4 km at 6.3%).
Ilan Van Wilder (Soudal Quick-Step) fell 54 kilometers from the finish, and he rejoined the peloton 10 kilometers later, while the fugitives were caught. Vansevenant had to abandon the race 36 kilometers from the finish, while some riders came out to take the lead at the top of the Côte des Glacis.
Benoît Cosnefroy attempted a solo attack in the last 4 kilometers, but the group came back on him to compete in the sprint. Arnaud De Lie came out from behind to impose himself in an imperial manner, celebrating his victory with his arms raised to the sky in memory of Tijl De Decker, before letting out a cry of rage.
With the 17th victory of his career, the first in the WorldTour, the Taureau de Lescheret succeeds the Frenchman Benoît Cosnefroy, winner in 2022. Philippe Gilbert won the 2011 edition, while Greg Van Avermaet finished 2nd four times (2012 , 2016, 2017, 2018) and twice 3rd (2013, 2019).
Sunday will take place the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal (WorldTour), the other stage of the Canadian diptych. Van Avermaet won it twice (2016 and 2019), following Tim Wellens in 2015.
