Jakarta, Indonesia (ots/PRNewswire) – World leaders, including Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape, gathered in Jakarta today for the first Indonesian Sustainability Forum (ISF) to discuss with global sustainability experts how to achieve a balance between growth and protecting the planet.
The Government of Indonesia, through the Coordinating Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Investment (Kemenko Marves), hosted ISF 2023, which attracted more than 800 participants, making it one of the most important sustainability meetings in the Asia-Pacific region. The ministry organized the forum in collaboration with the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin Indonesia).
Heads of multilateral organizations such as the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Kristalina Georgieva also took part in the event. World Bank President Ajay Banga participated in a fireside chat with Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut B. Pandjaitan during the gala dinner.
Speaking at the event, Luhut said Indonesia is poised to become an influential force to advance the sustainability agenda across the region.
“Every country is different, with different starting points, capacities and capabilities with constraints on decarbonization. But the climate crisis is our shared challenge, and therefore it is a problem for all of us. The failure of a single nation is a failure of the entire world. Therefore, collaboration is necessary for everyone to succeed. In the spirit of global cooperation, we launched the Indonesia Sustainability Forum,” Luhut said in his speech.
Kadin Indonesia Chairman Arsjad Rasjid echoed Luhut’s statement, stating that active and mutual participation of all stakeholders, including the global private sector, can lead to solutions that benefit all parties.
“Addressing global sustainability challenges requires a comprehensive, collaborative and integrative approach. By working with diverse stakeholders, including businesses, civil society and local communities, we can develop meaningful solutions that not only promote sustainable growth but also secure livelihoods,” said Arsjad.
More than 100 speakers from the business sector, civil society and government are taking part 10 plenary sessions and 14 thematic sessions. The plenary session will cover topics ranging from green energy transition and technology to biodiversity protection and downstreaming critical minerals for decarbonization. The 14 thematic sessions cover topics such as circular economy, international cooperation and green financing, among others.
