The Pacific: The Untold Story of Rugby’s Origins and Influence on the Great Nations

The Pacific, which is home to Micronesia, Melanesia, Polynesia, is a breeding ground for the great rugby nations, for reasons perhaps forgotten.

The poster is magnificent on Friday September 8, for the opening of the Rugby World Cup: France once morest New Zealand, the Blues once morest the All Blacks and the famous haka inherited from Maori culture.

The native peoples of New Zealand were formidable warriors, agile, explosive, swift. In 1870, the first rugby match organized in New Zealand, then a British colony, took place. At this time, the empire was mired in war with the Maori tribes. The British manage to impose themselves in a bloody manner, but they see in rugby the possibility of channeling the physical superiority of the Maori warriors, of concentrating their extraordinary abilities, by transferring the conflicts with them onto a rugby field.

Missionaries of the rugby religion

The missionaries will take care of the rest of the Pacific Islands by going to preach the virtues of rugby everywhere else: Polynesia, Melanesia, Tongas, Fiji, Samoas, with in their suitcase… an oval ball. And the descendants of these Pacific warriors today strengthen almost all the great rugby nations.

Thus the Manu Samoa, the flying Fijians and the Ikalé Tahi (“sea eagles”) of Tonga dispossessed these nations of their best elements. For example, during the last World Cup in Japan in 2019, Tonga left the competition before the quarter-finals, while 22 Tongan players (a full team) continued the adventure with other nations.

Indeed, the rules of the international federation authorize, under certain conditions, the naturalization of players. Rich nations naturally benefit from this regulation. The documentary Ocean’s A part reveals the plunder orchestrated by the great nations of these Pacific players, from a very young age.

If France escapes this controversy it is because its valuable players, Taofifenua, Moefana, Mauvaka (at work this evening), are from Wallis and Futuna or New Caledonia, French territories which have the status of communities overseas.
