This charming comedy-drama offers a sympathetic look at the love and friendship lives of Generation Z.

Sitting in Bars with Cake is the kind of feature film – a mix of romantic comedy, straight comedy and drama – that can now be found on digital platforms.

Adapted from the eponymous blog of Audrey Shulman – who also wrote the screenplay for the film –, Sitting in Bars with Cake begins with a simple premise: two childhood friends and now roommates develop a system to meet guys in bars by offering them cake.

In Los Angeles, Jane (Yara Shahidi) and Corinne (Odessa A’zion) accidentally realize that there’s nothing like candy to meet men. Because Jane, shy and reserved, is an excellent cook. Corinne, an extrovert who works in the field of music and whose boss is played by Bette Midler, therefore pushes her to put her talents to good use. But the film takes a more dramatic turn when we learn that Corinne has cancer.

Without ever falling into the overly cliché or excessively maudlin, Audrey Shulman and director Trish Sie (The Perfect Note 3) deliver a production that remains original – the dialogues and the chemistry between the two actresses have a lot to do with it – and refreshing. And if Sitting in Bars with Cake does not claim to reinvent the genre, the feature film turns out to be perfect for spending 120 entertaining minutes on a rainy day.

Sitting in Bars with Cake is presented via the Prime Video digital platform.
