Mayotte Water Crisis: Carla Baltus Urges Government Support for Businesses and Employment

2023-09-08 07:30:44

Carla Baltus, president of MEDEF Mayotte, was Zakweli’s guest this Friday.

Referring to the crises of 2011, 2018 and today’s water crisis, Carla Baltus admits that she has already been tempted to leave the island like many of her fellow business leaders, but “you have to hang on” she said, “it is not today or tomorrow that I will leave Mayotte”.

The “boss of bosses” warns of the risks of even more massive unemployment: “in Paris I heard the ministers talking regarding unemployment at 7% in France and the objective of full employment. In Mayotte we try hard not to exceed 40%. The unemployment rate will explode if we do not find solutions to the water crisis.”

According to the president of the local MEDEF, the numerous building and public works sites will be seriously threatened if they lack water, but also other businesses: “I met an optician, to cut spectacle lenses you have to water, the investment in a storage tank is 12,000 euros for him, where will he find this sum? “.

She also mentions these employees “who leave work early to catch up on work”, which impacts the profitability of companies.

Carla Baltus wants the State to trigger a support plan like during the Covid crisis, “I don’t want to believe that the government is going to abandon us”.
