King Charles on Friday thanked the fans for their “love and support” and pledged to be of service to all, on the first anniversary of the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth and his accession to the throne.
Elizabeth, Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, died at the age of 96 on September 8, at Balmoral Castle, her beloved summer residence.
Once she was gone, Charles succeeded her and became king of the United Kingdom and 14 other countries, including Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Charles plans to spend the day with his wife, Camilla, privately and quietly, at the royal residence in Scotland.
They are not scheduled to attend any ceremonial events, nor will there be any large private family gathering to celebrate his accession to the throne.
“On the occasion of the first anniversary of Her Majesty’s death and my accession to the throne, we remember with great love her long life, her loyal service and all she meant to so many of us,” Charles said in a statement.
“I am also so grateful for the love and support my wife and I have been showered with this year as we do our best to serve you all.”
On his part, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the nation’s hearts would be with Charles and his family on this “solemn anniversary”.
