NEW YORK (AP) — The US Open semifinal between Coco Gauff and Karolina Muchova was interrupted early in the second set due to protests by climate activists in the Arthur Ashe Stadium stands Thursday night.
Gauff led 6-4, 1-0 when the game was interrupted.
Tournament referee Jake Garner entered the court, while security personnel made their way to the site of the protesters. The activists wore T-shirts emblazoned with the phrase “End Fossil Fuels.” At least one person had her feet glued to the concrete surface, making it more difficult to remove her from the venue, said Stacey Allaster, the tournament director.
At least two protesters were removed from the stands. Moments later, half a dozen police officers showed up — cheered by fans near the section where the disruption occurred. He asked the spectators to move away to give the police officers space.
Gauff sat in his chair for a while and ate some fruit from a container. The American began to rally and make serves. The Czech Muchova received care from the physiotherapist during the game stoppage.
Eventually, both players made their way to the locker room as the delay dragged on. Gauff sat on a treadmill, chatting with members of his team.
It was the latest protest at a sporting event — and tennis, in particular — over the use of fossil fuels.
At Wimbledon last July, two matches were disrupted when activists stormed Court 18 and showered orange confetti on the grass.
