Swim Safely at the Belgian Coast: Tips for Enjoying Tropical Temperatures and Supervised Areas

This week’s tropical temperatures encourage many Belgians to take a dip in the North Sea. The tourist sector of the Coast is also expecting a large crowd this weekend and lifeguards are calling on swimmers to swim in supervised areas.

The Belgian Coast traditionally attracts many tourists during the summer. This year, the summer season ended on August 31, but the good weather is expected to attract crowds of holidaymakers this weekend.

According to figures from the provincial tourism agency Westtoer, hotels show an occupancy rate of 85% for the night from Friday to Saturday, and even 90% for the following night. However, as the summer season is over, some aid stations are no longer open. “Until September 17, only one post is open in each coastal municipality, but the 83 posts are not all occupied as during the summer“, said An Beun, head of the intermunicipal coastal rescue of West Flanders (IKWV).

The latter therefore invites weekend holidaymakers to swim in the supervised areas. “Last summer, accidents occurred in unsupervised areas. As the latter are now larger, caution should be exercised. The temptation can be strong with the good weather, but be careful“.
