A state of cautious calm prevailed in the Ain al-Hilweh camp in Lebanon at dawn on Friday, amid talk of reaching a cease-fire between the Fatah movement and the “Muslim Youth” group, following clashes that took place on Thursday evening.
A Palestinian source spoke to the Arab World News Agency (AWP) regarding a number of civilian casualties, including a child, without specifying the final number of wounded, indicating that most of the people went to the mosques adjacent to the camp, mainly the Mosuli mosque.
However, he stressed that reaching an agreement “does not necessarily mean a final cessation of the clashes, as they might renew at any moment, and the matter is linked to the ability of the contacts led by Lebanese and Palestinian personalities to stabilize the calm in the camp.”
Clashes broke out on Thursday evening Ain al-Hilweh camp in southern Lebanon between the Fatah movement and armed groups, at a time when the Lebanese army imposed a tight security cordon around the camp.
Al-Arabiya and Al-Hadath correspondent stated that the security situation inside Ain Al-Hilweh camp became tense on Thursday evening, as violent clashes took place between the Palestinian National Security Forces and Islamic groups in the emergency zone, in which heavy weapons and machine guns were used, and the sounds of shells and bullets were heard in and around the city of Sidon.
The local media also mentioned that the clashes are taking place on the axis of reconstruction of the barracks, and the use of machine guns and shells that reverberate in the city of Sidon.
The camp witnessed a massive displacement movement amid the escalation of clashes inside the camp in the emergency neighborhood and the Tahtani Street.
A source in the Palestinian National Committee told the Arab World News Agency (AWP) that the reason for the clashes in the camp is due to the refusal of “Islamic” groups to hand over the wanted persons in the assassination of the head of the Palestinian National Security Brigadier General Al-Armoushi last July.
The source added, “It was supposed to hand over eight wanted persons within a maximum deadline that was yesterday, and it was extended to today.”
The source pointed out that with the delay of the groups in the Safsaf neighborhood in the camp in handing over the suspects, preparations began during the past days for “any security event, which required the deployment of Palestinian forces, mainly Fatah, in the neighborhoods facing the whereregardings of the wanted groups.”
There have been no reports of casualties in the clashes yet.
