A homeless woman gave birth without medical assistance in a Gatineau wooded area at the start of the summer, the Cooperative of Paramedics of the Outaouais confirmed on Thursday.

The 27-year-old woman gave birth to a child on June 29, in a wooded area near a homeless encampment in Old Hull, downtown Gatineau.
“We transported the patient and the baby to the Gatineau Hospital Centre,” said Marie-Ève D’Aoust, communications coordinator for the Cooperative. She confirmed that the woman was identified as “homeless” on the ambulance call card.
“Both were in stable condition,” continued Ms. D’Aoust. Two ambulances were deployed to this call.
It was the mayor of Gatineau, France Bélisle, who revealed the case earlier in the day, as an illustration of the homelessness crisis that is hitting her city.
The elected official had related that during a visit to an improvised camp, another homeless person had told her that he had heard “an 18-year-old girl screaming”, a few days earlier, in a wooded area. “They looked for her and she was in labour. Alone,” she lamented. “It was other itinerant women who helped this woman and who guided the paramedics. What is that ? Is this my Quebec of 2023? »
The age of the patient mentioned by Ms. Bélisle was incorrect, but the rest of the story corresponds to information from the Cooperative of paramedics of the Outaouais.
The Mayor of Gatineau said she had already reported this situation to the Minister responsible for Social Services, Lionel Carmant.
“I’m doing your job, Mr. Carmant. Because you should be investing in it,” she told him. “These people need help. »
